Sunway Group Healthcare and Sunway Education Join Hands with RCP-University of Cambridge

It is timely and welcome that the Sunway Group is collaborating with esteemed institutions such as Cambridge and Oxford to bring to the forefront advances in diabetes research, techniques and therapies and how these are being extended to patient care. This is exactly the kind of partnership and knowledge sharing that will help Malaysia tackle the alarming increase of diabetes in Malaysia.

Sunway Medical Centre (SunMed) and Sunway University signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) today with University of Cambridge and the Royal College of Physicians, London (RCP), to establish a series of jointly collaborated Continuous Medical Education (CME) seminars. The MoA was signed by Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly, Department Head of Clinical Biochemistry and Co-director of Wellcome Trust MRC Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge; YBhg Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, Chancellor of Sunway University and Founding Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation; Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University; Mr Lau Beng Long, Managing Director of Sunway Group Healthcare Services and Professor Jarlath Ronayne, Cambridge-Sunway collaboration co-ordinator and witnessed by the Minister of Health, YB Datuk Seri Dr Haji Dzulkefly. The MoA was signed during the 3rd Cambridge-Oxford-Sunway Biomedical Symposium titled “DIABETES: Disarming the Silent Killer”.
These CME seminars aim to combine clinical care, research and education and will further SunMed’s ambition to become one of the few private teaching hospitals in Malaysia. SunMed having been appointed as University of Cambridge’s first regional site partner for clinical research also strengthens their credibility towards this goal. The inaugural Royal College of Physicians- Sunway- Cambridge Medical Seminars will take place on 28 April 2019 in Sunway Medical Centre. The 1-day programme will bring together world-renowned specialists to discuss the latest trends and developments in acute/general medicine through a blend of plenary lectures and breakout workshops on a wide range of topics including infectious disease, geriatrics, dermatology and respiratory medicine. All doctors of general, specialist practice and medical students are encouraged to attend.
YB Datuk Seri Dr Haji Dzulkefly lauded the collaboration in his speech saying, “It is timely and welcome that the Sunway Group is collaborating with esteemed institutions such as Cambridge and Oxford to bring to the forefront advances in diabetes research, techniques and therapies and how these are being extended to patient care. Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, said in his speech, “At Sunway, we are passionate about education and health care. We are committed to raising the standards of excellence in both these sectors in Malaysia and the region. Our efforts in this sphere reflect the Sunway Group’s commitment to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, SDG 3 – the universal goal of good health and well-being for all.”
He continued, “At Sunway, we recognise that realising the SDGs is not the sole responsibility of governments, it requires the commitment of all sectors of society — the private sector, academia, civil society, and, of course, every single individual. We are all in this together.”
The 3rd Cambridge-Oxford-Sunway Biomedical Symposium brought together leading experts in the field of diabetic research from University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and Monash University to convene, to share and discuss current and emerging healthcare issues in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, recent advances in diabetes research and its relation to sustainable patient care. Along with these experts, participants from Sunway University also presented abstracts on their views and findings in diabetic research. The symposium is supported by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.
