Hand and Microsurgery

Hand and Microsurgery is a surgical discipline that manages all traumas and diseases affecting the hand, wrist, or upper limb that affect hand function and where needed, microsurgical reconstruction is performed. The range of services includes:

• Traumatic injuries including fractures, tendon injuries, digit amputation, nerve lacerations and blood vessel lacerations
• Congenital abnormalities such as webbed fingers and extra digits on the hands
• Workplace and overuse injuries, which include carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger and DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
• Arthritis-related deformities such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
• Infections such as from diabetes
• Tumours: bone and soft tissue – producing deformities

The centre also provides rehabilitation to help individuals achieve optimal function of their hand and upper limbs. Services offered include mobilisation and exercise; fluidotherapy; therapeutic ultrasound; electrical stimulation e.g. TENS and EMS; splinting and pressure garment fabrication; management of oedema, scarring and pain; and programmes on joint protection, work conditioning and ergonomics programme.
