Non-Surgical Treatment Options
The type of treatment recommended will depend on your specific condition. Listed below are some of the types of treatments that may be recommended by your doctor.
Supportive Therapy
You may need supportive devices and/ or bandages on the area that’s bothering you. Your doctor may suggest the R.I.C.E.method, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation, which are practical and conservative approaches to reduce joint pain from injury or overuse.
- Rest to avoid further injury.
- Ice your ankle or foot on and off for 15 minutes at a time.
- Compress your ankle or foot by applying an elastic bandage to help reduce swelling and provide some support.
- Elevate your shoulder during rest by propping up your head and shoulders on a pillow or wedge.
Lifestyle Changes
Modifying activities to avoid high-impact exercises and making lifestyle changes like weight loss can help decrease pain and stress on the foot and ankle. Wearing comfortable, well-fitting shoes, and pads on the affected area may also help in minimising the discomfort.
Physiotherapy
A physiotherapist will guide you through exercises to make your muscles stronger, enhance flexibility, and restore function.
It is important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plan.
Surgical Treatment
Our specialists treat a wide range of conditions, including degenerative disorders of the foot and ankle, sports injuries, trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction, tendinopathies, foot deformities as well as diabetic foot disorders.
Some of the surgical services we offer:
Ankle Replacement
Joint replacements have come a long way in the past decades. During modern ankle replacement surgery, the doctor replaces the parts of the ankle that no longer work properly because of changes from injury or arthritis, or both. The surgeon fits the talus bone of the upper foot and the tibia bone at the end of the lower leg with metal components made of cobalt chromium alloy with pure titanium where they come in contact with bone. Those components sandwich a smooth, medical-grade plastic between them, allowing the now metal-capped bones to glide easily as you move your ankle.
You and your doctor have more options when it comes to ankle replacement today. Your doctor may talk with you about different approaches to ankle replacement.
Ankle Fusion
Usually performed to treat painful arthritis in the ankle, ankle fusion surgery (referred to as tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis) “fuses” the bones of the joint into one unit. One of the goals of fusion is to reduce pain and swelling when other options aren’t appropriate or haven’t helped.
