Colorectal surgery encompasses a range of procedures aimed at repairing damage to the colon, rectum, anus, and pelvic floor. These surgeries are often necessary due to conditions such as colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) that affect the lower digestive tract. 

In addition to traditional surgical approaches, minimally invasive techniques like endoscopy and colonoscopy are increasingly used as outpatient treatments. Upper GI endoscopy involves examining the lining of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Flexible sigmoidoscopy uses a fibre-optic camera to explore the rectum, sigmoid, and colon. Colonoscopy, another common procedure, plays a crucial role in diagnosing colorectal polyps and other colon and rectal problems.
