Navigating Heart, Lung & Vascular Health Concerns

The heart, a vital organ, requires a smooth flow of blood to function optimally. Blockages or disruptions can lead to discomfort and serious health implications. Chest discomfort often arises from heart disease, lung disease, or vascular disease. Conditions like coronary artery disease, pulmonary hypertension, or peripheral arterial diseases can be the culprits behind such symptoms.

Early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve outcomes, ensuring a healthier and longer life.

Types of Heart, Lung & Vascular Conditions

Heart, lung, and vascular diseases include various conditions that affect the heart and lungs. These conditions can greatly affect a person's health. Knowing the different types of these diseases is important for detecting, diagnosing, and treating them promptly.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

There are several forms and symptoms of heart disease. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart itself.

Heart Conditions
  • Angina (chest pain)
  • Arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm), e.g. Atrial Fibrillation (AF)
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • High Cholesterol
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Valvular Heart Disease
  • Congenital Heart Disease (Paediatric) – Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Patent Foramen Ovale, Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Structural Heart Disease – Cardiomyopathies, Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
  • Coronary Artery Disease/ Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)
    • Acute Coronary Syndrome
    • Stable Coronary Artery Disease

Venous Disease

Vascular Disease

Vascular disease refers to medical conditions that affect your circulatory system, including diseases of the arteries, veins, and lymphatic system.

Vascular Conditions
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
  • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Varicose Veins
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Vascular Access (AV Fistula)

Arterial Disease

  • Abdominal Aortic aneurysms & Thoracic Aortic aneurysms
  • Aortic dissection & Dissecting aneurysms
  • Peripheral arterial diseases: Occlusive diseases | Embolism & Thrombosis | Aneurysms
  • Diabetic foot and ulcers
  • Carotid artery diseases: Carotid artery stenosis | Carotid body tumour | Aneurysm
  • Renovascular hypertension

Venous Disease

  • Varicose veins
  • Deep venous thrombosis
  • Venous ulcers

Other Conditions

  • Vascular access procedures for hemodialysis (AVF)
  • Arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
  • Traumatic vascular injury
  • Hyperhidrosis (Sweaty palms)

Venous Disease

Lung Disease

Lung disease encompasses various conditions that affect the lungs and can significantly impact a person's respiratory health.

Lung Condition
  • Lung Cancer
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Asthma
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis
  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Cystic Fibrosis

Who is Suitable for Heart and Vascular Treatments?

  • Those with a family history of heart or vascular diseases.
  • Patients with risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

Vascular Laboratory & Endovascular Rooms

The Vascular Division uses advanced tools to screen, diagnose, and treat patients with vascular disease. The Non-Invasive Cardiac Lab (NICL) has a Vascular Laboratory with 'Doppler' and Duplex ultrasound scanners for safe and accurate diagnosis. For further evaluation, patients may also have a 64-slice CT Angiography or Magnetic Resonance Angiography.

In treating vascular disease, the Vascular Division offers both open surgery and minimally invasive procedures. Some patients may benefit from endovascular procedures, while others may require open surgery. There are also cases where a combination of endovascular intervention and open surgery is recommended. The Vascular Division has a dedicated Endovascular suite for these procedures.

Vascular Laboratory

Vascular Laboratory

The Vascular Laboratory is used to study blood flow in arteries and veins, and most vascular disease patients can be investigated there. Our on-site vascular lab is state-of-the-art, with the necessary equipment and staff to perform tests in a minimally invasive manner. This lab is dedicated to investigating, diagnosing, and monitoring vascular conditions.

Endovascular Suite

Endovascular Rooms

Sunway Medical Centre is the first and only hospital in the country with a state-of-the-art, dedicated Endovascular Suite. In this suite, diagnostic studies and procedures can take place in the same room at the same table without having to move the patient. Vascular surgeons can perform not only open surgery but also minimally invasive procedures in the same place. This is especially helpful in emergency situations where diagnosis and treatment must be done simultaneously and efficiently.
