Why Am I Experiencing Knee Pain?
Smooth and healthy cartilage is necessary for pain-free walking, as it cushions the bones in your knee joint. Additionally, strong muscles and ligaments provide stability for your knee, which is not a simple hinge joint. When you bend your leg to walk or climb stairs, the bones rotate, roll, and glide on each other.
Knee pain and stiffness often result from :
- osteoarthritis
- injury
- general wear
- tear
Other knee problems include :
- rheumatoid arthritis (an inflammatory joint disease)
- previous infection
- poor alignment of your bones
With osteoarthritis, the cartilage cushion wears away, resulting in rough bones that rub together and cause pain. With rheumatoid arthritis, the joint may become inflamed and swollen.
A painful, stiff knee can hinder daily activities like walking. An orthopaedic surgeon can replace your knee, and with a knee replacement, you can resume many of your daily activities without pain and discomfort.

Services & Procedures Offered
One of our specialties is Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (UCR), a form of surgery that can provide effective pain relief and restore good knee function.
UCR is a partial replacement of the knee joint that resurfaces only the diseased compartment. It's a great option for patients whose arthritis only affects one compartment of the knee joint. In the past, UCR surgery had variable outcomes, but today's modern UCR has a 98% survival rate after 10 years of implantation. The minimally invasive technique for UCR is a major technical advancement in knee replacement surgery that allows for a small incision and minimal blood loss.
Recovery time is typically 3–4 weeks, and our dedicated rehabilitation programme will help you achieve the best outcome. Our experienced team of orthopaedic surgeons uses advanced techniques and technology to perform robotic-assisted knee replacement surgeries, including computer navigation, to ensure accurate alignment and longer-lasting implants.
At Sunway Medical Centre's Bone & Joint Centre, we're committed to providing the highest quality orthopaedic care. Contact us today to learn more about our services and how we can help you regain mobility and live a pain-free life.
Rehabilitation After Knee Replacement Surgery
After your procedure at our Bone & Joint Centre, our care for you continues. We'll provide you with detailed instructions for exercises and medications, and our team will be available to answer any questions you may have. Most patients are able to return home five to seven days after the operation, and outpatient physiotherapy will be arranged to aid your recovery.
What Can I Expect After the Knee Replacement Surgery?
Most patients are back to their daily routines within four weeks, feeling comfortable and independently mobile. Your new knee will serve you well for general, non-impact activities like walking, climbing stairs, and even cycling, swimming, golf, and bowling. However, it's important to avoid high-impact activities like jumping and running to ensure your knee stays strong and healthy for years to come.
We use state-of-the-art technology to perform robotic-assisted knee replacement surgeries, including computer navigation, to ensure accurate alignment and longer-lasting implants. Most of our patients have successful outcomes, with UCRs expected to last beyond 10 years. In the rare cases where a replacement fails, conversion to a Total Knee Replacement is usually effective.
